Vernazza Cinque Terra

Yesterday we left Firenze for the beach. Leaving Florence was not easy. Our time there was magical. Easy days. Beautiful art and architecture and some of the best foods.

Andiamo! to La Spieggia!

We traveled by regionale trains: three of them. Firenze to Piza then on to La Speiza. From there a slower train to each of the 5 Terra. Our stop was Vernaza. Pennsione Sorrisio. Our hosts Aldo, Francesca and their son Martino who is just four. The train trip was short but very challenging due to the number of tour groups and the weather. It was temporarily rainy and windy so the ferrys between points were not running, therefore more people on and off the short  train stops. At last we arrived. It was as we remembered. Simple but so lovely. We have stayed here in the past and enjoyed it. In 2011,  due to powerful storms and rains, this town and the town to the east, Montotosso di Mare, were devastated by mud slides. Since then both towns have been rebuilding and are now open and  as before with key improvements. Many  modernizations are subtle but important such as environmental adjustments. Even the lights and water in the house plumbing are sensitive and energy efficient. It was great to be back. The sun came out and we headed to the beach , la Spieggia.
Lunch by the Ligurian sea with typical dishes and local wines and bierras.

Then a stroll to the village square for gelato, the daily quotient. After a hike  west towards the top of the path to Corniglia, a stumble on a relaxing perch in the sun, we napped. Ready then for more time in Vernazza sitting, relaxing and people watching. By now the day trippers and hikers had vanished and the little town was quiet. Perfect time for a glass of proseco then search for the perfect dinner spot. We were well rewarded with a dry crisp Proseco then dinner at Gambero Rosso. The chef, his family and staff created a memorable evening. Ligurian style dishes  matched with perfect wines. After the meal weird in doors as it was now quite chilly in the piazza. We were treated by our waiter and chef to homemade Limoncello. Amazing!
Buona Notte!
